Hugh did not serve overseas; his records show that he had postings in SA and the Northern Territory, with a total of 1477 days of active service.
He stood out in the country town of Colac of the 1970s as he chose to live in the most spartan conditions on the outskirts of town. Hugh would frequently walk into Colac for a drink, carrying his hessian sack and a walking stick.
