Wilkinson enlisted with 301st Mechanical Transport section of the AIF during 1914.

He discharged from the AIF on the 2 December 1916 to join the Royal Flying Corps.

By 1918 he was serving as an observer with 8th Squadron, Royal Flying Corps, based at Vert Galand, France.

On 29 March 1918, Second Lieutenant Wilkinson (Observer) and Captain Ernest William Monk RFC (Pilot) flying in Armstrong Whitworth FK8 aircraft C3661 were shot down and killed during aerial combat while on an artillery patrol.
