Lawrence Roy Hibberson was born on the 3rd of August 1921 at the Tallangatta Hospital to Robert Enever Hibberson & Pearl Elizabeth Caroline Hibberson (Smith).
He was the 6th of 8 children.
Laurie lived at Little Snowy Creek Eskdale on a dairy farm in the early years of his life.
Leaving school in year 8 at the age of 12, Laurie worked on the family farm. At the age of 14 he commenced work on a nearby farm and was paid the handsome sum of 8 shillings a week.
At the age of 18, Laurie left Eskdale and headed to Gippsland to milk cows.
In 1941 at the age of 20, Laurie joined the Australian Army and trained in Queensland.
Part of his training involved learning to ride a motorbike on the soft sandy beaches of Queensland, after which he was sent to New Guinea as a disptach rider, delivering messages from headquarters to the frontline on a motorbike.
He served in the Army for three and a half years, leaving the Army in 1944.
