Biography contributed by St Ignatius' College

Dudley Samuel Foy was born in Adelaide, South Australia, 30 March 1890.  Prior to enlisting he worked as a Colt Breaker.

Dudley enlisted 11 September aged 24. His attestation form described him as having light brown hair, brown eyes (right eye glass), with a dark complexion. He was 5 feet 9 ½ inches tall and had a weight of 162 pounds, a chest size of 36 inches. He had a distinct mark located on the right-hand side of the lower jaw. His religious denomination had been noted as Protestant. His father, William Foy of Glenelg was his nominated next of kin.

He embarked from Australia 12 January 1915 on board HMAT Armidale from Melbourne. After training in Egypt, the 9th Light Horse was transferred to Gallipoli in May 1915. Amonth later he was sent to hospital with influenza and returned to Egypt for treatment and was diagnosed with Dyspepsia 6 July 1915. He was transferred to a convalescent camp 14 July. Once recovered he wasa transferred to Base at Mustapha.

Once again he was greated in hsopital with Dyspepsia in May the following year. His condition did not imporve and he was also diagnosed with gingivitis. He continued to be treated at various hospitals and convalescent depots in Egypt until he was transferred by Hospital Ship Kanowna to England 12 August 1916. Dudley remained at Depots in England completing administrative work for the remainder of the war. He was appointed Acting Sergeant 8 November 1916 and Extra Duty Pay Corporal in May 1917.

Dudley married Vera Phyllis Foy (1897-1976) 17 October 1917 in Dorset, England.

On 24 January 1918, Dudley Samuel Foy was considered permanently unfit for general service, most likely due to his repeated illnesses. He was discharged in England. In 1919 his wife gave birth to daughter Beryl Thelma (1919-1990)

Not until February 1920 did official letters formalise his return. Dudley came home aboard the H.T. Osterley accompanied by his wife and baby and landed in Adelaide in March 1920. In 1924 Dudley and his wife welcomed another daughter, Daphne Miriam Mary (1924 - 2008). A newspaper article in the Glenelg Guardian in 1930 stated that Dudley was the operator of a garage.

Dudley Samuel Foy died on 8th of December 1971. He was buried at Centennial Park Cemetery, South Australia. His service is recorded on the Glenelg District Honour Board and on the South Australian Garden of Remembrance.
