John left Adelaide on board HMAT A2 Geelong on 31 May 1915. The majority
of his war service was spent in France where he was wounded twice in 1916.
On the first occasion John was shot in the arm and was treated at No. 26
General Hospital in Etaples. Less than four months later he sustained a
gunshot wound to the right thigh. He was able to rejoin his battalion on 25
August 1916. John served out the remainder of the war in France and
returned to Australia on the Bahia Castillo on 17 April 1920.He was discharged
on 16 July 1920.
