Biography contributed by Cherilyn McMeekin

Walter was known by his middle name, Russell. He was the younger of two sons of William and Ada SCOTT. His brother, Thomas, also served in WW2, in the RAAF (45737).

Russell was captured at Ruin Ridge at Alamein. He was a POW on board the Italian transport ship Nino Bixio when it was torpedoed by a British submarine in the Mediterranean on 17 August 1942. The Nino Bixio was transporting Allied POWs from Libya to Italy. Russell was one of 122 Australian POWs to survive the incident.

His father, William, died in May 1942 at age 64 and did not live to see his son return safely home to Western Australia in 1945.

Within weeks of his arrival, Russell's engagement was announced to Anita 'Nita' Joan ABBOTT, but they did not marry. In March 1949, he married Joan Asquith MORTON in Highgate. He died in 1992 at age 74.
