Remembering our Soldiers
John "Jack" Gregory Buckley was born in Yarragon Vic on 15/10/1915 the youngest of 6 children 4 girls and 2 boys all born in Victoria Australia
His father Lawrence John Buckley arrived from Tipperary Ireland in 1891 with his sister Catherine.
He married Ellen Davison in 1902 in Victoria, John was the last of their 6 children, 4 girls and 2 boys.
Lawrence was employed in the Victorian railways as a shunter/ assistant station master and was moved around several times, thus the children being born in different places, with the children’s schooling also in several areas.
Like so many of that time John has grown up during the great depression of 1929/30. He no doubt was working, when possible, to help the family or to survive as a youth.
John Married June Theresa McNamara, on the 17/4/1946 in Melbourne.
They went on to have 4 children, 3 boys and a girl. “My Wife of 55 years so far”
From John’s marriage, he is found to have worked in many industries.
Electrical rolls show him as a furnaceman, an Iceman, a Butcher, a Gardner at Moonee Valley racecourse and Barman at the Moonee Ponds Hotel.
After the war, John spent time around Carnegie south of Melbourne, before moving after his marriage to the other side of town to the inner North/West, areas of Essendon & Moonee Ponds, until his death from cancer on 5th April 1985.
Both John (VX75257) and his brother Lawrence (NX54018) served their country.
