Private Cliff Alfred Atwell (Service No:V64778) enlisted in the ACMF on 15 April 1941 with 7 Infantry Battalion, transferring to 38 Infantry Battalion on 28 February 1943. Private Atwell served with 38 Infantry Battalion in Darwin, NT (29 July 1943 - 25 November 1944) and transferred to 11th Infantry Battalion on 9 August 1944. He embarked with 11th Infantry Battalion from Darwin for Jacquinot Bay on 25 November 1944 on board the Jane Adams. Private Atwell embarked for Brisbane on 21 April 1945 on board the Taroona and was attached to 11th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 24 October 1945. He was one of six brothers (Maurice, Harold, Albert, Walter and Cyril) who served in WWII.
Cliff (nee Clifford) was born in Rainbow, Victoria in 1917, fifth of twelve children of George Alfred Atwell (b1884 in Templars, South Australia) and Amy Eleanor Rogers (b1888 in East Cannum, Victoria). George was a Farmer in Rainbow in 1909 when he and Amy married. The couple settled in Rainbow where they raised their family and George was a Farmer.
Cliff worked as a Labourer in Rainbow before enlisting in the ACMF, and in 1942 at Woorak via Kiata in Victoria he married Phyllis Doreen Ansell (b1918 in Nhill, Victoria). Following his Discharge, Cliff and Phyllis lived in Nhill where Cliff worked as a Labourer. Phyllis died in 1947 and in 1949 in Nhill, Cliff married his second wife Dorothy Daisy Rowe (nee Menzil; b1919 in Jeparit, Victoria). Cliff and Dorothy settled in Nhill where Cliff worked as a Labourer and, following Dorothy's death in 1977, Cliff married his third wife in 1984 in Horsham - Annie Maud Tonkin (nee Thomas; b1924 in Morwell, Victoria). Annie died in 2004 and Cliff in 2016.
