Staff Sergeant Leonard Alfred Withers (Service No:WX28465) initially served in the ACMF (Service No:W38371) from 5 January 1942 with Western Command Trades Training and transferred to the AIF as a Staff Sergeant on 15 August 1942. Staff Sergeant Withers served with Motor Vehicle Trade Training Centre (MVTTC) and HQ Northern Territory Force Reception Camp, and was attached to 5 Infantry Troops Workshop at Discharge on 10 November 1944.

Born at Kookynie, Western Australia in 1905, Len was the eldest of four children of Alfred Joshua Withers (b1880 at Pleasant Creek, Victoria) and Olive Compston (b1885 at Goroke, Victoria). Alfred (a Master Butcher) and Olive married in Coolgardie, WA in 1906 and lived in Kookynie, Leonora and Kalgoorlie where Alfred was a Butcher before moving to Fremantle  by 1913 where Alfred was a Fruiterer. The family then lived in Geraldton, Northampton, Bruce Rock and Merredin where Alfred worked as an Accountant, an Agent and a Storekeeper before returning to Fremantle in the 1930s where he again worked as a Butcher. In the early 1940s Alfred and Olive moved to Katanning, WA where Alfred was Licensee of the Royal Exchange Hotel - Olive was Housekeeper. Following Olive's death in 1950, Alfred had retired to Albany by 1963. Alfred died in 1965.

Len worked in Fremantle and Perth as a Motor Mechanic, and in 1929 in Perth married Alma May Stewart (b1908 in Bunbury, WA). Following his service in WWII; Len and Alma settled in Katanning where Len worked with his father as Hotel Manager (Royal Exchange Hotel). In the early 1960s Len and Alma moved to Albany, WA where Len was a Farmer. Len died in 1975 and Alma in 1999.
