Private Patrick Cunningham enlisted in December 1914, landed at ANZAC Cove Gallipoli with the 7th Light Horse Regiment on 15th May 1915 and remained there until the evacuation on 18th December.
Over the next 3 years he saw further active service with 7 L/H on operations in Palestine, Syria, Egypt, Beersheba, Jordan, Amman, Jersusalem and Jericho. During this time he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and was wounded in action.
As one of the original "1914 Men" of the Regiment, he was amongst the first to be stood down from active service following The Armistice to end hostilities on 11th November 1918.
Sgt Cunningham returned to Australia on 7th January 1919, resumed civilian life in the Sydney suburb of Earlwood where subsequently he was: married, the father of 2 sons and a daughter, widowed and again married. He passed away from complications during routine surgery at the age of 68 but was survived by his 2nd wife, 3 children and 7 grandchildren.
For his active service during WW1 he earned the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
