Thomas Eagles was shot in the arm at Pozieres on 23 July 1916. He was evacuated to England with a compound fracture of the forearm and eventually returned to Australia on 4 May 1917 due to the severity of the wound. His brothers, 3300 Pte Herbert Walter Eagles, also 1st Battalion AIF, died of wounds, 20 June 1916 and 3302 Pte William Frederick Eagles, also 1st Battalion was killed in action, 12 July 1918. They had all enlisted on the same day, the sons of Henry and Bridget Eagles, of Albury, New South Wales.
