Corporal Raymond Ralph McGowan (Service No:VX116520) initially served in the ACMF (Private; Service No:V17865) from 3 November 1941 to 28 July 1942. Promoted to Corporal in May 1942, he was attached to 2nd/3rd Ordnance Stores AAOC in New Guinea when he enlisted 'in the field' in the AIF. Corporal McGowan served in New Guinea (27 December 1941 to 1 September 1943 and 17 October 1943 to 29 September 1944), and was attached to 10 Ordnance Depot (AOD) at Discharge on 16 April 1946.
Ray was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1911, fourth of eight children of Thomas McGowan (b1878 in Ecucha, Victoria) and Caroline Louisa Phipps (b1883 at Littleriver, Victoria). Thomas was a Labourer in Melbourne when he and Caroline married in 1905. They settled in Melbourne where they raised their family and Thomas worked as a Labourer, Pipe Moulder and Furnaceman.
Ray worked as a Tinsmith and Diesetter in Altona in Melbourne before enlisting in the Army in 1941. He returned to Melbourne following his Discharge and worked in Altona as a Tinsmith and Diesetter until his death in 1961.
