The youngest of seven children, James was born in 1918 in Perth WA to James Alderson Howson (b1876 in Durham, England) and Minnie Mary Ann Ballard (b1879 in Adelaide, South Australia). James Snr emigrated with his mother and siblings in 1880, arriving in Fremanle WA on board the Robert Morrison. James Snr and Minnie married in 1897 in Fremantle WA. The couple lived in Fremantle and Kalgoorlie before settling in Perth where James Snr was a Painter.
James was working as a Painter's Labourer in Perth WA in August 1941 when he enlisted in the ACMF (Private; Service No:W80177). In November that year he married Mary Eastlake (b1921 in Perth, WA). James was attached to 7 Ordnance Depot when he was Discharged in December 1945. He and Mary were living in Perth WA, where James was a Painter's Labourer, when he died in 1949. Mary later remarried.
