Son of Benjamin Owens and Jane Owens nee Baxter of Emerald Street, Collingwood, Victoria.
Brother of Benjamin Owens who was killed in action on 5 April 1918 while serving with the 39th Battalion and is buried in the Heilly Station Cemetery, Plot 11, Row I, Grave 17.
Commenced return to Australia on 3 March 1919 aboard HT Euripides disembarking on 20 April 1919

During 1922c Emil married Ethel Eveline Williams in Victoria
