Sergeant Malcolm Kerr (Service No:VX3544) initially served in the Militia (Private; Service No:93479) from 8 May 1935 to 18 July 1938. Private Kerr enlisted in the AIF on 31 October 1939 - graded Technical Storeman - and was attached to 2/1 Field Workshops on 3 January 1940 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Kantara. Private Kerr embarked from the Middle East for Melbourne on 16 March 1942 on board HMT Mauretania via Bombay (ex Bombay on board the Esperance Bay). Sergeant Kerr then served with 2/1 Ordnance Store Coy and was attached to 1 Base Ordnance Depot (BOD) at Discharge on 1 October 1945.
Malcolm was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1914, youngest of two children of William Malcolm Kerr (b1888 in Bairnsdale, Victoria) and his first wife Elaine (Nellie) Evelyn Cole (b1891 in St Arnaud, Victoria). William was a Pastry Cook in 1912 when he and Nellie married in Melbourne. Following Nellie's death in 1914, William remarried to Dorothy Frances Sheppard (b1897 in Coburg, Victoria) in 1917 in Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family and William worked as a Cook and Baker.
Malcolm worked as a Commercial Photographer in Melbourne before enlisting in the Militia and AIF. Following his Discharge, he worked as a Travelling Salesman in Melbourne where, in 1950, he married Margaret Dillon Lucas (b1921 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Margaret was working as a Stenographer in Melbourne. Malcolm and Margaret settled in Melbourne where Malcolm worked as a Sales Representative. Following Margaret's death in 1976, Malcolm moved to San Diego in California, USA where he died in 1994.
