4 Jan 1941: Honoured Companion of the Distinguished Service Order, Libya/North Africa, Citation of Award For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the attack on BARDIA on 4 June 41. He led his squadron with determination and dash on ET-EL-HABBUN which he captured together with 2000 prisoners. Later he led his squadron on a reconnaissance patrol to BARDIA town where he was met with severe resistance. By his coolness and courage he held the enemy until the arrival of the "I" tanks and some infantry. With this support he succeeded in capturing NORTH BARDIA. He displayed coolness, courage and devotion to duty throughout the battle and was an inspiration to the members of the squadron.
