Served and suffered during The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

83 years ago today, on the Wednesday afternoon of the 16th November 1938, Private Joseph Patrick Rice, also known as Joser, 56th Battalion (Reg No-3470), labourer from "Beechworth", 13 Cleary Street, Hamilton, New South Wales and 24 Lindsay Street, Hamilton, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 46. CATHOLIC 2-51. 77.

Born at Hamilton, New South Wales on the 25th March 1891 to James William and Elizabeth (Eliza) Rice, Joser enlisted November 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Wounded in action - 24.4.1918 (gassed), 17.8.1918 (GSW chest, left arm, head).

Joser was invalided home (GSW head) February 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 10th July 1919.

Mr. Rice’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor (photo, unveiled on the 23th May 1918, 430 names to be inscribed, 372 names now inscribed, 36 Fallen), Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies on Joseph’s brown granite headstone in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

I will be submitting an application to DVA asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque to be placed at brother James’s gravesite to restore Honour and Dignity for his suffering during The Great War.

Admitted to hospital 7.1.1917 (trench feet), 12.3.1917 - hallux valgus (foot deformity), severe.
Wounded in action - 18.9.1918 (GSW face, left leg & right knee, severe).

Invalided home February 1919.
