Biography contributed by Geoffrey Gillon

Births Mar 1896    Hawkins Thomas Ipswich 4a 890

He enlisted twice-owing to loss of original records

He embarked from Australia for the Front twice because in 1915, he had returned sick to Australia for 'three months change'

He gave his next of kin as his brother, William Hawkins, 499 Wharncliffe Gardens, St Johns Wood, London NW, England

He stated his religion as Congregational and Church of England; he is honoured on the war memorial tablet in Ipswich's Congregational Church.

He had been employed as a turner/tool fitter at the Orewll Works of the renowned Ransomes, Sims and Jefferies Limited, a major British agricultural machinery maker also producing a wide range of general engineering products in Ipswich, Suffolk including traction engines, trolleybuses, ploughs, lawn mowers, combine harvesters and other tilling equipment. Ransomes also manufactured Direct Current electric motors in a wide range of sizes, and electric forklift trucks and tractors. They manufactured aeroplanes during the First World War. Their base, specially set up in 1845, was named Orwell Works.

Ransomes' railway equipment business was hived off in 1869 with a different ownership as Ransomes & Rapier and based nearby at Waterside Ironworks.

He is honoured on the factory war memorial.
