Born in Trafalgar, Boulder WA, Jack was the youngest of two children of Edwin David Collins (b1872 in Delorraine, Tasmania) and Bertha Wilhelmina Knott (b1881 in Lockwood, Victoria). Edwin (a Butcher) and Bertha married in Boulder, Kalgoorlie WA in 1902 and lived there until the 1920s when Edwin moved to Millington Mills WA, where he was a Butcher and Farmer. Bertha moved to Perth WA where she remarried in 1942.

Jack settled in Marvel Loch, Yilgarn WA where he was a Butcher. By 1940 Jack was living in Perth WA with Maud Mary Moulton (nee Otway; b1894 in Beverley WA). He enlisted in the ACMF in January 1942 (Private; Service No:W21300) and listed Maud Mary Moulton as his unmarried wife. Jack served with 3 Advance Reinforcement Depot and was Discharged in November 1944.

Jack and Maud lived in Victoria Park, Perth WA where Jack worked as a Butcher and the couple married in 1948 (following the death of Maud's first husband - Herbert Horace Moulton). In the early 1950s the couple returned to Marvel Loch, Yilgarn WA where Jack was a Prospector until his death in 1966. Maud then returned to Perth WA where she died in 1984.
