Private John Frederick Cathcart Hogben (Service No:VX56286) enlisted in the AIF on 20 May 1941 at Recruit Reception Depot (RRD) Royal Park, transferring to 2 Cavalry Division Training Squadron on 8 June 1941. Private Hogben served in the Middle East (18 September 1941 - 24 June 1942) with 9th Division Cavalry Regiment and 2/11 Field Regiment - graded Signaller and Gunner. Private Hogben was attached to 2/11 Field Regiment at Discharge on 6 April 1944 (Medically Unfit).

John was born in Brunswick, Victoria in 1913, eldest of four children of Edwin (Alf) Alfred Hogben (b1891 in Narracan, Victoria) and Florence John Keeling (b1893 in Woodford, Victoria). Alf worked as a Labourer in Trafalgar, and he and Florence married in 1912 in Yarragon. Alf and Florence lived in Yarragon, Trafalgar and Narracan, where they raised their family and Alf was a Labourer and Orchardist. In 1920 Alf and Florence moved to Melbourne, where Alf was a Dairy Produce Merchant. In the late 1930s Alf and Florence moved to Windarra via Birchip, where Alf was a Labourer, and then moved to Cardinia where Alf was a Farmer.

John was a Farmer in Sunshine in 1940 when he married Helen Janet Nye (b1916 in Sunshine, Victoria). Following his discharge from the Army, John and Janet lived in Tyabb via Seaford, then Pakenham, where John was an Orchardist until his death in 1954. Janet later remarried.
