Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Private Roy James Murphy (Service No:VX36262) enlisted in the AIF on 5 July 1940 - 12 and 2/6 AITBs - and embarked from Melbourne for Palestine on board the Mauretania on 29 December 1940. Private Murphy embarked from the Middle East for Sydney on 28 February 1943 and was attached to 24 Employment Coy and AITBs (1 and 34). He was attached to 2/6 AITB at Discharge on 3 September 1945.

Roy was born in Newport, Melbourne, Victoria in 1919, third of five children of Joseph Owen Murphy (b1891 in Parkes, NSW) and Olive Margaret King (b1893 in Omeo, Victoria). Joseph was a Billiard Room Marker in 1915 when he and Olive married in Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family. Joseph worked as a Grocer and Fruiterer.

Roy was a Plastics Press Hand in Melbourne in 1940 when he enlisted in the AIF. Following his Discharge in 1946, he returned to Spotswood in Melbourne, where he was a Grocer and Grain Merchant (Murphy and Drake - partners). In 1947 Roy married Joan Ethel Miles (b1927 in Williamston, Melbourne, Victoria) and they settled in Spotswood where they raised their family. The business partnership was dissolved in 1947, and Roy carried on business as a Grocer until the early 1950s, when he worked as a Moulder before joining the Post Master General's Department in 1956 as a Postal Officer and later Clerk.  Joan died in 1989 and Roy in 1990.
