Peter Leitch
In 2018 I travelled to the Western Fronts of France and Belgium. I was following my Grandfather, Hugh Argyle Leitch Private 1st AIF 507, who is Peter's cousin on my father's side.
During this tour we had a War Historian researching our stories and travelling with us. He has being able to give an update to Peter's war service and death. Previously Peter was believed killed on the Menin Road Ypres though this is not possible as Peter's name does not appear on the Menin Gate memorial.
Peter Leitch was killed in battle on 14th November 1916 a day before his 30th birthday. He now lays, with no known grave, in the vicinity of the Warlencourt Cemetery. The German Army held this area for a number years during World War I and any soldiers killed during this battle were not able to be recovered.
I visited Warlencourt Cemetery by chance during this tour, this particular stop was not in our itinerary, we had some spare time before our group were due back at our hotel. I was able to lay a poppy on the grave of an unknown soldier, I choose row 'L' for our family name. As I lay the poppy on the grave the late afternoon sun shone through the tree outside the cemetery. The sunlight hit the tombstone of the grave I had chosen. I wonder whether I choose Peter's grave?
