Private/Sapper Jeffrey Joseph Martin (Service No:NX73972) - Trade Groups Storeman, Miner and Engine Hand - enlisted in the AIF on 9 December 1941, and was attached to 2/3 Australian Independent Field Squadron RAE at Discharge on 23 November 1945.
Jeff was born in Sydney, New South Wales in 1920, eldest of two shildren of Joseph Michael Martin MLC (b1898 in Sydney, New South Wales) and Minnie Louisa Fuller (b1895 in Sydney, New South Wales). Joseph had a long involvement in the Trade Union movement, and formed and played in the City Houses Rugby Leauge in 1919 when he and Minnie married Sydney, where they settled and Joseph was an Engineer, Organiser of the Electrical Trades Union and member of the Milk Board. From 1931 - 1934 he was a Member of the NSW Legislative Council. In 1938 Joseph and Minnie moved to Newcastle, where Joseph was active in Rugby Leage and Manager of Dairy Farmers' Co Operative Milk Coy until his death in 1940.
Jeff was a Labourer and rugby player in Newcastle in 1940 when he married Margaret Watson Vail (b1921 in Fife, Scotland) - Margaret immigrated in 1928, arriving in Sydney on board the Ballarat. Following his Discharge from the Army, Jeff and Margaret settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and Jeff worked as a Sealer before becoming a Truck Driver in the early 1950s. Jeff died in 1979 and Margaret in 1982.
