Biography contributed by Geoffrey Gillon

Son of Thomas Benion and Mary Keen of 57 Heathfield Avenue, Dover, England. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 30 October 1914 and embarked at Sydney for overseas on 20 December 1914 per HMAT "Ayrshire" (A33), initially with the 7th Light Horse Regiment. He embarked at Alexandria 24 May 1918 per HMAT "Indarra" for United Kingdom for Cadetship in A.F. Corps. He was accidentally killed when he flew his plane through a dense low lying mist to ascertain his whereabouts and crashed into the trunk of a fallen tree at Minchinhampton, aged 28 years.

Copy of extract from Third Supplement No. 30901 to the London Gazette dated 16th September 1918.
"AWARDED THE MILITARY CROSS
HIS MAJESTY THE KING has been graciously pleased to approve of the above award to the undermentioned Warrant Officer in recognition of his gallantry and devotion to duty in the field:-
No. 210 Regimental Sergeant-Major THOMAS LLEWELLYN KEEN.
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in maintaining communication between squadrons. To do this he had to expose himself to exceptionally heavy rifle and machine gun fire and it was owing to his resource in taking and sending messages that the regiment was kept together."
