Died on this date - 3rd September.....Private William Robert Syle was born at Richmond, Victoria in 1886. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 23rd August, 1915 as a 29 year old, married Clerk from Arncliffe, Sydney, NSW.

Private William Robert Syle embarked from Sydney on HMAT Aeneas (A60) on 20th December, 1915 with the 2nd Infantry Battalion, 13th Reinforcements & disembarked at Egypt (date not recorded). He was transferred to 54th Battalion & joined them on 21st February, 1916 at Tel-el-Kebir.

Private Syle arrived in France on 29th June, 1916. He was admitted to Field Ambulance on 2nd November, 1916 with varicose veins then transferred to Hospital. He rejoined his Unit on 7th December, 1916.

Private Syle was declared illegally absent by a court of enquiry from 2nd January, 1918. He was apprehended on 28th March, 1918. A Court Martial was held on 23rd May, 1918 & found he was not guilty of desertion but guilty of A.W.L. & sentence to 90 days Field Punishment.

Private Syle was sent to Hospital sick on 17th August, 1918 from Detention. He was invalided to England & admitted to Military Hospital at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire on 25th August, 1918 with Colitis (severe).

Private William Robert Syle died at 8.50 pm on 3rd September, 1918 at the Military Hospital, Sutton Veny of Tuberculosis generalised & Peritonitis generalised.

Cause of death was verified by a Post Mortem. He was buried in St. John the Evangelist Churchyard at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire, England where 140 other WW1 Australian Soldiers & 2 Australian Nurses are buried.
