Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Len was the son of William Hampton (b1871 in NSW) and Matilda Jane Harper (b1875 in Allandale, Victoria). William (a Contractor) and Matilda married in Boulder/Kalgoorlie in 1905  and lived in Mt Leonora, Coolgardie - where William was a Miner and Contractor - before moving to Wagin in 1911. William worked as a Contractor in Dowerin while Matilda moved to Perth in the late 1920s - William followed his wife to Perth in the late 1930s.

Len worked as a Contractor in Dowerin WA with his father before moving to Perth by 1940. He was working as a Truck Driver in Leederville when he married Thelma May Dyson (nee O'Leary; b1911 in Perth, WA) in June 1941. In August 1941 he enlisted in the ACMF (Private/Sapper; Service No:W7560) and was attached to 11 Battalion when he Discharged in July 1942 to enlist in the AIF.

Len served as a Gunner (Service No:WX27050) in New Guinea (4 April 1943 - 20 March 1944) and in Borneo (4 May 1945 - 16 December 1945) with 55 Coy RAE and 2/3 AA Regiment S/L Battery. Len was Discharged in 1946. Brother Frederick James (Service No:29802) also served in WWII.

Following his Discharge, Len returned to Leederville and worked as a Labourer. Thelma died in 1951 and in 1953 Len remarried - Kathleen Ester Mary Ann Mills (nee McSweeney; b 1906 in Greenbushes, WA). The couple settled in Perth where Len worked as a Plasterer. Kathleen died in 1977 and Len in 1980.
