He was granted leave from the Railways on 20th August 1914 when he enlisted in the AIF. He embarked from Sydney on 18th October 1914, on HMAT A19 ‘Afric’.

He proceeded to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force in Alexandria (Egypt) on 3rdd March 1915 .

On 10th August 1915, he embarked for England on HMAT ‘Aeneas’. When he arrived in London, he was admitted for myalgia on 23rd August. This was discovered to be appendicitis, which would result in him needing an operation.

On 6th December 1915, Macpherson was discharged from the AIF because he had ‘obtained a commission with the Imperial Army’ in the Royal Field Artillery.
