Born in 1910 in Mawlamyine, Myanmar James Jnr was the second of  seven children of James Horatio Utting Snr (b1880 in Yorkshire England) and Elna Haswell (b1886 in Myanmar). James Snr (a Master Mariner and River Pilot) married in 1908 in Rangoon, Burma where they raised their family. In 1936 the family arrived in Fremantle WA on board the Narkunda and settled in Cottesloe WA. James Snr and his six sons all served in WWII.

James Jnr completed a Bachelor of Engineering and was working as a Civil Engineer in Northam WA in 1936 when he met Ruth McKinnell (b1913 in Northam WA) - Ruth was a Typist. The couple married in Sydney NSW in 1938 and James was in Tasmania when he enlisted in the ACMF (Service No:T102347). Ruth was living in Sydney NSW in February 1944 and James was in New Guinea when he enlisted in the AIF (Lieutenant; Service No:TX16093). James was attached to 8 Australian Troops Coy when he was Discharged in September 1945. All of James' brothers served in WWII - and two (Richard and Peter) were KiA.

James and Ruth lived in Darwin, NT where James was a Civil Engineer before settling in Cotteslowe in Fremantle WA by 1954. James worked as a Civil Engineer, and according to family history, died in England on 29 January 1991. Ruth died in 2000 in Fremantle WA.
