One of three brothers Joe and Fred) who served in WWII, Private Alexander Bernard Kavanagh (Service Nos:N394548/NX176731) initially served in the ACMF as a Private (Gunner) with 3 Heavy Anti Aircraft Battery from 1 August 1942 to 11 December 1943, and was 'in the field' in Stockton NSW when he enlisted in the AIF the following day. Private Kavanagh served in Borneo (Morotai and Balikapan) with 2/1 Australian Anti Aircraft Regiment (Composite) from 10 June 1945 to 8 January 1946, and was attached to the Regiment at Discharge on 21 January 1946.
Fifth of nine children, Alex was born in Brisbane QLD in 1912 to Harry William Kraushaar (b1883 in Surrey, England) and Jane Barber (b1884 in Maclean, New South Wales). Harry immigrated in 1896, arriving in Brisbane on board the Merkala and settled in Brisbane where he and Jane married in 1904. Harry was a Public Servant, and in WWI changed the family name to Kavanagh.
Alex started work in 1928 in Brisbane as a Telegraph Messenger with the Postmaster General's Department, and was a Postal Employee in Brisbane in 1938 when he married his first wife Mary Elizabeth Lucas (b1914 in Brisbane, QLD). Alex and Mary moved to Canberra in 1940, and Alex was a Public Servant (Clerk) in 1942 when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge, Alex and Mary lived in Canberra, where they raised their family and Alex was a Public Servant. In the early 1950s, Alex moved his family to Brisbane, where Mary died in 1952. Alex worked in Brisbane in the Public Service (Department of Commerce and Agriculture) and was with the Department of Primary Industry at retirement in 1976. In 1959 in Brisbane, Alex remarried to Enid Isabel Lawrie (b1926 in Strathalbyn, South Australia) - Enid was a Typist in Brisbane. Enid died in 1982 and Alex in 1992.
