Robert was the eleventh of sixteen children of Frederick Read (born 1885 in Essex in England) and  Ellen Jane Chase (born 1864 in Hampshire in England). Frederick and Ellen met in Gooburrum near Bundaberg in QLD and married in 188. Frederick was a Labourer and Selector, and involved in community affairs. The family setteld at Yandarran Creek near Avondale just before the commencement of WWI.

Robert was a Labourer when he enlisted in the AIF in Bundaberg, QLD in 1916. He served with 31st Infantry Battalion and 49th Infantry Battalion as a Private (Service No: 4587) and was WIA in France in 1918. Robert was Discharged in 1919 and worked as a Labourer in Avondale near Bundaberg in QLD.

In 1924 Robert married Lily May Lovett (born 1897 in Bundaberg, QLD) in Petersham, NSW. They settled in Avondale, QLD where Robert worked as a Labourer until he retired in the late 1950's. He and Lily then lived in Bundaberg, QLD where Robert died in 1963 and Lily in 1973
