Private John Drummond Herd (Service No:VX85321) initially served in the ACMF (Gunner; Service No:V165902) from 9 March 1942 to 19 June 1942 with 112 Light Anti Aircraft Regiment. Private Herd served with 112 Light Anti Aircraft Regiment in Darwin (30 September 1942 - 26 November 1944) and was attached to 159 Anti Aircraft Battery at Discharge on 7 March 1946. Siblings Frank and Murray also served in WWII.

Jack was born in Geelong, Victoria in 1920, fifth of nine children of Francis (Frank) Oswald Herd Snr (b1882 in Geelong, Victoria) and Maud Cecelia Lamb (b1883 in Geelong, Victoria. Frank Snr (a Dealer) and Maud married in 1913 in Geelong, Victoria where they settled and raised their family and Frank Snr was a Dealer.

Jack was a Stock Buyer in Geelong when he enlisted in the Army, and in 1945 in Camperdown, Victoria married Dorothy Evelyn Woodmason (b1921 in Geelong, Victoria) - Dorothy was a Stenographer in Birregurra, Victoria. Following his Discharge, Jack and Dorothy settled in Casterton, Victoria where they raised their family and Jack was a Stock Buyer. In the late 1950s Jack and Dorothy returned to Geelong where Jack worked as a Stock Buyer until his death in 1963. Dorothy died in 2004.
