On October 5th 1917 at G.H.Q., Small Arms School, St. Cecile Plage, when one of a rifle grenade Section in a demonstration of a platoon in an attack, one of his bombs fell five yards in front of fire position occupied by the Section owing to faulty cartridge. He immediately sprang forward and flung the bomb a distance of twenty yards, at same time calling to his comrades to take cover, thereby undoubtedly saving a number of their lives.
