Leslie was the second of four children of James Tregellis Smart (b1883 in Ararat, Victoria) and Harriet Elizabeth Paynter (b1865 in Ampitheatre, Victoria). James - a Labourer - and Harriet married in 1908 in Ararat, Victoria where they settled and raised their family.
Leslie was a Labourer in Stawell, Victoria when he married Catherine Mary Gehan (b1912 in Stawell, Victoria) in 1933. Leslie and Caatherine settled in Stawell and in March 1942 Leslie enlisted in the Australian Army. He was a Trooper (Service No:VX77231) attached to 2/6 Australian Armoured Regiment when he was Discharged in February 1946. His Father and Uncle served in WWI and numerous cousins also served in WWII. Brother Henry Roy (Flying Officer; Service No:42866) also served in WWII.
Leslie returned to Stawell following his Discharge, and worked there as a Labourer and Wood Carter. Catherine died in 1972 and Leslie died in 1992.
