Gerry was the fourth of six children of Lewis Henry Ballard (b1882 in Kiata, Victoria) and Annie (Dot) Irene Elsie Williams (b1887 in Boggabri, NSW). Lewis (a Labourer) and Dot married in 1904 in Yilminning near Narrogin, WA where they lived before moving to Perth WA.

Gerry worked as a Laundry Hand/Assistant Dry Cleaner in Perth WA and in May 1943 enlisted in the ACMF (Private; Service No:W53960). In July 1943 he enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:WX22470) and served with 16th Advanced Ammunition Depot and 19 Ordnance Depot. Gerry served in New Guinea (12 October 1944 - 27 May 1945 and 6 August 1945 - 6 May 1946) and was Discharged in July 1946.

Returning to Perth WA, Gerry lived with his mother and worked as a Laundry Hand. In the early 1950s he married Theresa Mary and later was a Works Supervisor. Gerry died in 2007 and Theresa in 2017.
