Son of Alfred Underwood and Rebecca Underwood of 'Braybrooke', Kingsley Road, South Harrow, England.
Next of kin given as William Underwood of the above address.
25 Janaury 1915 - enlisted at Liverpool, NSW with 2nd Battalion and rank of Private.
3 April 1916 - transferred to ANZAC Police.
25 May 1916 - promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal.
25 April 1917 - transferred to 62nd Battalion
12 December 1917 - transferred to the 2nd Batallion. Rank revert to Private.
13 March 1918 - transferred to the Australian Employment Corps.
21 October 1918 - Richard married Sybil Runyard in the Wool Parish Church, Wool, Dorset, England. E. Clifford Hawkes officiated.
20 April 1919 - discharged in London, unit demobised and classed medically unfit.

Commenced return to Australia on 26 Janaury 1922 aboard HT Ballarat accompanied by his wife and two children
