Jim was the only child of James Lindsay Gardner (b1890) and Elsie Annie Quiney (b1900 in Warwickshire, England). Elsie immigrated with her parents in 1912, arriving in Fremantle WA on board the Ajana. James (a Tallyman) and Elsie married in 1919 in Holyoake, WA where they lived until James' death in 1921. Elsie moved to Perth with Jim following her husband's death, and worked as a Nurse. Elsie and Jim lived with her parents until her death in 1940.
Jim was living with his Grandparents in Perth and working as a Clerk when he enlisted in the Australian Army in October 1941. He was a Sergeant (Service No:WX16860) attached to 2/10 Armoured Regiment when he was Discharged in November 1945.
In 1944 Jim married Shirley Chipper (b1914 in Perth, WA) and following his Discharge, Jim and Shirley settled in Perth where Jim worked as an Assistant Departmental Manager and Business Manager.
