Walter was the second of nine children of Walter James Mitchell (b1890 in Delorraine, Tasmania) and Paulene Wishart (b1891 in Perth, WA). Walter Snr (a Butcher) and Paulene married in 1911 in Perth WA where they settled and raised their family. Walter Snr was a Butcher.
In the 1930s Walter worked as a Farm Hand in Meekering WA and was a Tin Smith in Perth WA in December 1941 when he enlisted in the ACMF (Sapper, Private: Service No:W7694). Walter served with 11th Infantry Battalion, 12 Ordnance Stores and 8 Ordnance Depot. He was in Darwin (8 February 1944 - 6 June 1945) and was Discharged in January 1946. Brothers Sydney and Roy also served in WWII.
Walter settled in Perth WA where he was an Assembler and Sheetmetal Worker until his death in 1978.
