Son of John Underwood and Mary McEvoy of Wigan, Lancashire, England. 

His tailor cutting apprenticeship of eight years was served H. Brown-Haigh of Wigan, England.

Previously served six years with the Manchester Volunteer Battalion and twelve months with the NZ Corps.

Husband of A.W. Underwood of Wellington Road, Norwood, SA. 

24 September 1914 - enlisted at Morphettville, SA, with the 1st Stationary Hospital with the rank of Private.

Commenced return to Australia on 13 February 1917 aboard HT Benalla disrmbarking on 12 April 1917 at Melbourne. Re-embarked HT Clan McGilvray on 11 May 1917 for onward travel to Adelaide.

8 August 1917 - discharged at the 4th Military District

Medals: 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal

In 1933 he was residing in Sydney Street, Knoxville, SA (now split between Glenside and Glenunga, SA)
