Private David James Carlton (Service No: VX149027) initially served in the Militia (18 January 1939 - 18 April 1940) as a Sapper attached to 4 Field Coy RAE, and the ACMF as a Lance Corporal (Service No:VP7243) with 2 Australian Proviost Coy (15 July 1940 - 3 January 1943) - attached to Royal Military College Duntroon (Cook) in late 1942. Enlisting in the AIF at Winnellie in Darwin, NT on 4 January 1943, Private Carlton served as a Cook with 2 Provost Coy in the NT until 2 February 1945, and was Discharged on 1 November 1945. Siblings John, George and William also served in WWII.

David was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1918, eldest of four children of David Neilson Carlton (b1884 at Mt Egerton, Victoria) and Isabella (Elsie) Gertrude Cariss (nee Woolley; b1889 in Melbourne, Victoria). David Snr worked as a Miner at Mt Egerton and Mt Magnet, WA, and as a Labourer, Carter and Driver in Melbourne. In 1916 he served briefly in the AIF (Private; Service No:2627) before being Discharged as medically unfit (fractured foot). David Snr was a Labourer in 1918 in Melbourne when he married Elsie (a Divorcee with two children). The couple settled in Melbourne where they raised their family and David Snr worked as a Labourer until his death in 1945.

David worked as a Labourer with Melbourne City Council before enlisting in the Army, and in 1942 in Melbourne married Ettie May Mary Smith (b1919 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Ettie lived in Canberra while David was posted to RMC Duntroon. Following his Discharge in 1945, David and Ettie settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and David worked for Melbourne City Council as a Labourer, and from the early 1950s worked as a Carpenter. David died in 1987 and Ettie in 1989.
