Malford Bruce Ballard (Bruce) was the oldest of six children born to Aletha May Starr and Charles Malford Ballard of Thuddungra, NSW. Bruce's mother died suddenly in 1936 when he was just 12. Bruce enlisted when he was 21 years of age and served as a trooper in New Guinea. On his return to Australia, Bruce worked as a farmer, including around Wagga. He lived for many years in Kootingal with his second wife, Margaret Mason (nee Styles). He married Daphne in around the year 2000. They spend many happy years together.
