Corporal Eric Bourne Bates (Service No:V507486) enlisted in the ACMF on 20 May 1942 as a Private posted to AAOC Training Battalion. Promoted to Corporal on 16 January 1946, he was attached to 3 Australian Base Ordnance Depot (BOD) on 30 June 1947 when he Discharged, to enlist the following day in the Interim Army. Corporal Bates was attached to 3 BOD at Discharge on 15 June 1948. Older brother Hugh served in WWI (Private; Service No:521).

Eric was born in Ararat, Victoria in 1903, youngest of eight children of Robert Bates (b1867 in Ararat, Victoria) and Sarah Jane Bellingham (b1870 at Cambria Hill via Ballarat, Victoria). Robert and Sarah married in 1890 in Ararat, where they settled and raised their family and Robert worked as a Baker. In 1919 Robert and Sarah moved to Melbourne, where Robert worked as a Labourer.

Eric was a Leatherworker in Melbourne, and in 1936 married Florence Jean Miller (b1907 in Broadford, Victoria). Eric and Florence settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Eric was a Storeman in 1942 when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge in 1948, Eric and Florence lived in Melbourne, where Eric was a Leatherworker and Machinist until retirement in 1970. Florence died in 1966 and Eric died in 1972.
