John Carle worked with his father in Sydney, who was a wharf foreman for some years. He was an original member of the 1st Battalion and enlisted in 1914. John Carle was mortally wounded during the fighting at Lone Pine. He was first treated on Gallipoli at the 3rd Field Ambulance and was removed to Malta by hospital ship in the 12 August 1915. He died of wounds, shell wounds to the thigh and side, in Cottonera Hospital, Malta, 28 August 1915.
His older brother, 2806 Lce. Cpl. William Carle 13th Battalion AIF, was killed in action at Goudecourt, France on 4 February 1917, aged 27.
