Son of Albert James Backway and Alice Backway nee Warne of Maryborough, Victoria.
Brother of Leslie George Backway who was killed in action on 20 December 1916 while serving with the 5th Battalion and was buried in the Bernafay Wood British Cemetery. Row J, Grave 59, Roy Backway, Frank Backway, Winniefred Alice Backway, Clarence Edward Backway who returned to Australia on 5 September 1919 having served with the 8th Battalion and William John Backway
