James’s mother died when he was only 1 year old and his father remarried later. James fought at Pozieres in France before he suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen in Belgium 14 September 1916 and died of his wounds the same day in a Casualty Clearing Station.

James’ younger half-brother 2950 Pte.George Hubert Vincent Smith, 7th Battalion, was killed in action at Ypres on 4th October 1917.
