It is pleasing to note the rapid advancement made by Mr Leslie G. Merkel, son of Mr and Mrs Merkel, of Rushworth, in the 14th Field Engineers Company. When Mr Merkel left Sydney about thirteen months ago he bad risen to the rank of Sub.-Lieut., but since reaching the trenches in France he has gone one further and now ranks as Lieutenant. Lieut. Merkel has been fortunate in that although he has been over five months in the trenches he has only received one small scratch on the neck. We join in wishing that his good luck and success will stick to him.
Lieutenant Leslie Merkel, who was formerly employed in the local office of the Water Commission, is now in France. He embarked with teh 14th Field Engineers Co., from Sydney, just over twelve months ago. His promotion to the rank of Lieutenant was made in France, where he has served for twelve months without injury worth mentioning. Lieutenant Merkel hails from Rushworth.
