Biography contributed by Robert Wight

A telegraph messenger from Strathbogie, Victoria prior to enlistment, Pte Delahey embarked with D Company from Melbourne on HMAT Runic on 20 June 1916.

He contracted Nephritis at sea and never really recovered, eventually returning to Australia on 12 November 1916.

He later enlisted in the 2nd AIF (VX61159) and served as a Staff Sergeant with 2/2 Field Company.

If the birth date listed on his 2nd AIF papers is correct (5 September 1902) then it would appear Delahey may have only been 13 years old when he enlisted in the 1st AIF (stating he was 18 yrs 5 months old at that time).
