George was born in London, England in 1886, third of nine children of George Sparks (b1861 in Bethnal Green, London, England) and Emily Ashford (b1863 in Bethnal Green, London, England). George Snr (a Riveter) and Emily (a Domestic Servant) married in 1883 in Bethnal Green, where they settled and raised their family and George Snr worked as a Bootmaker. In 1913 George Snr and Emily immigrated with four of their children, arriving in Port Adelaide on board the Ballarat. The family settled in Adelaide, where George Snr was a Bootmaker.

George started work in Hackney as a Paper Boy, and was a Wood Machinist in 1910 when he married Dorothy Maud Neale (b1889 in Hackney, London, England). George and Dorothy immigrated that year, arriving in Melbourne on board the Salamis and moving to South Australia, where they settled in Edwardstown. George was working as a Wood Machinist in 1914 when he enlisted in the Army, and following his Discharge, he and Dorothy settled in Adelaide, where they raised their family and George worked as a Wood Machinist.
