Trooper John Robert Bartley (Service No:WX10661) enlisted in the Australian Army on 15 January 1941 attached to 1st and 13th Infantry Training Battalions. Trooper Bartley served with 2nd/3rd Commando Battalion and 2nd/7th Cavalry Commando Regiment in New Caledonia (17 December 1941 - 8 August 1942), New Guinea (19 January 1943 - 5 October 1943) and Borneo (25 May 1945 - 21 November 1945). He was attached to 2nd/3rd Commando Battalion when he was Discharged on 12 December 1945.

Born in 1913 in Albany WA, John was the second of nine children of John (Jack) Robert Bartley (b1890 in Richmond, Melbourne, Victoria) and Gertrude Margaret Keyser (b1888 in Albany, WA). Jack (a Labourer) and Gertrude married in 1910 in Albany WA where they settled and raised their family and Jack worked as a Labourer.

John was a Waterside Worker in Bunbury prior to enlistment for WWII, and following his Discharge he returned to Bunbury and employment as a Waterside Worker. John was briefly (four months) married in 1946 to Jane Connor Leckie (b1921 in Scotland) - Jane had immigrated with her parents and siblings in 1927, arriving Fremantle WA on board the Bendigo. A Divorce was granted in 1951 - Jane remained in Perth and John in Bunbury where he remarried Erica May in 1952. John remained in Bunbury where he was a Waterside Worker until shortly before his death in 1975.
