Lieutenant Jack Dolphin Lamb (Service No:VX5116) initially served in the Militia (Private; Service No:445719) with 23/21 Battalion from 20 April 1939 - 3 November 1939 before enlisting in the AIF on 4 November 1939. Promoted to Lance Corporal in March 1940, he served with Intelligence Section Specialised Group 2 before embarking from Melbourne for Kantara with 2nd/6th Infantry Battalion on 13 April 1940. Sergeant Lamb served in Egypt and Greece before returning to South Australia in May 1942, and in October that year was a Lieutenant attached to 2/3 Independent Coy (Commando Squadron). Lieutenant Lamb was an Instructor with 1 Commando Training Squadron in 1944, and served with 2/3 Squadron Squadron in New Guinea, Morotai and Balikapan before Discharge on 29 November 1945. During his service, Lieutenant Lamb was hospitalised on several occasions with recurring Malaria. His fater, William Andrew Lamb served in WWI (Private; Service No:6050) and WWII (Private; Service No:V24405) and siblings Milton, Max and Frank, and wife Gladys also served in WWII.
Jack was born in 1920 in Geelong Victoria, youngest of six children of William Andrew Lamb (b1880 in Geelong, Victoria) and Amy Stella Dolphin (b1879 in Chewton, Victoria). William (a Machinist) and Amy married in 1907 and lived in Foster where they raised their family and William worked as a Carrier and Farmer. Following his service in WWI; William was granted land at Barrabool under the Discharged Soldiers' Settlement Act 1917 - 1919. William and Amy settled at Barrabool where William was a Farmer and Labourer before retiring to Geelong.
Jack worked as a Clerk in Geelong, where in 1944 he married Gladys Joyce Simpkin (b1923 in Maryborough, Victoria) - Gladys served in the RAAF. Following their Discharges, Jack and Gladys settled in Geelong where they raised their family and Jack worked as a Grocer and Foreman before moving to Melbourne in the early 1960s where he was a Manager. In the late 1970s the family returned to Geelong, where Jack was a Director. Jack died in 2003 and Gladys in 2005.
