Major Philip Lindsay Cooper (Service Nos:N75424/NX160742) initially enlisted in the Militia on 1 September 1936 as a Sergeant (Service No:264195), and was attached to 1 Division RAE. On 25 June 1940 Warrant Officer II Cooper enlisted in the ACMF, and was attached to 8 Field Coy RAE, serving in the Northern Territory (Adelaide River, Katherine and Darwin) from 23 July 1940 to 22 July 1942 with Darwin Port Coy. Captain Cooper was 'in the field' in Darwin when he enlisted in the AIF on 23 July 1942, and was a Major when he served in New Guinea (29 July 1943 - 30 May 1944) and in Morotai in 1945. Major Cooper was attached to 5th Australian Chief Engineer (Works) RAE at Termination of his Appointment on 10 December 1945.

Phil was born in Hakodate, Japan in 1917, second of five children of Albert (Jack) John Valentine Cooper (b1875 in Shanghai, China) and Nellie Mordaunt Moreton Clarke (b1882 in Sydney, New South Wales). Jack was a Merchant and Commission Agent of Japan, and he and Nellie married in 1913 in Sydney, living in Japan, Sydney and London. In 1924 Jack and Nellie arrived with their children on board the Barrabool in Sydney, where they settled and raised their family and Jack worked as an Accountant.

Phil was an Accounts Clerk in Sydney before enlisting in the Army. Following Discharge, Phil returned to Sydney where, in 1945 he married Barbara Marie Vautin (b1918 in Sydney, New South Wales). Phil and Barbara settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and Phil was a Clerk and Manager. The couple retired to Tweed Heads, where Barbara died in 1993. Phil died in Tewantin, QLD in 1996.
